Depression Defined

Medical doctors and pharmaceutical companies will tell you that depression is a medical condition that requires you to take medication. The medication you will take will need to be taken most likely for the rest of your life. Though medication does work I don't know anyone who wants to rely on medicine for the rest of their lives. There are some who need the medication if nothing else to pull themselves out of the blackness but I do not believe anyone needs to remain on medication for depression. I do think you should seek medical advice if you are suicidal or thinking about harming yourself or someone else. I also think you should talk to your doctor before taking yourself off of any anti-depressants you are currently taking.
Depression is medically defined as a chemical imbalance of the neurotransmitters that send messages to your brain and nervous system. I define depression as sadness, lack of energy, trouble concentrating, feeling down, irritable, and all that goes along with feeling that way. Medically speaking those are the symptoms of depression, but aren't the symptoms what we are experiencing? If these are the feelings can't we take control and change the way we are feeling?
I say YES we can! I know we can because I have!
I still have "depressed days" and my chemical imbalance is still there. I still experience the "down" feeling it's what I choose to do with that feeling that matters.
When I start to feel down I have two options, I can either give in and let myself drown or hold my head high and pray like it's nobody's business. I can make the decision to do something!
I will be sharing my experiences with my depression as well as the choices I make to overcome it everyday!

Welcome

Hi there everyone! I wrote an article on saying goodbye to depression without the use of meds around a year ago and as I was looking through the feedback I realized I can not and should not just stop at that. I know what it feels like to struggle with depression and I know how it feels to overcome it! I did it and continue to rise above depression everyday! I am starting this blog for those of you who need to talk. Feel free to leave any comment you would like to share here and I or one of the other readers will respond. You can also personally e-mail me at alainaellington@gmail.com and I will answer as soon as possible. I want you to know that you are not alone, that though you are down now there is hope, and that you can overcome your mental state without the use of medication. There are some who will need the meds, but I look at medication as a last resort.
Know that I do care, and am here if you need someone to listen or to talk back.
